What qualifications do I need to be a singing teacher?

Technically none! All you need is experience and knowledge in singing, performance and music in order to teach (and of course be able to convince people to train with you!) Although I would say it would comedown to ethics. IF you do not know enough about how the voice works or what may cause issues such as breathiness, strain, pitching issues, appropriate rep for ages and abilities and genders, how to warm up and train individual voice types and not just your own, this is when you need to train!

Now I went through the route of BTEC to HND to Degree (UK based qualifications) but I didn’t feel like that actually prepared me for the things I would need to know, and a lot of my trainee teachers agree. My essential teaching knowledge came from one to one voice lessons and professional development courses. Learning about my own voice and its problem areas, learning about the anatomy, vocal mechanism and different training methodologies. Also the most important part was time and experience working with lots of different voices. It’s important for a singing teacher to know how to diagnose voice problems and be able to “prescribe” the fix, as well as demonstrate the solid vocal technique you are wanting or needing from your student! A singing teacher with a healthy technique is essential for role modelling to your students. The Contemporary Voice Singing Teachers Academy brings together all the essential knowledge and experience opportunities you need to build and sustain a successful teaching practice!

"TCVA’s Singing Teacher Training Course is one of the most comprehensive courses I have taken!"

After finding my way into teaching alongside my performance career, I have been trying to fill the gaps in my knowledge, TCVA’s Singing Teacher Training Course is one of the most comprehensive courses I have taken! I really liked that this is a one to one course – others that I had taken part in were only group based, or just pre recorded videos and after taking part in those previously, and then coming to study with Sally, I realised just how little I picked up before. There was no one there to ask questions, or even someone to question me on my understanding of what I had absorbed from the sometimes “stale and boring” videos. Sally held my hand all the way through, always checking on if we were still on the right track for my interests and needs. After completing my Stage One Training I am now full steam ahead on my Stage Two, and I am so glad I found Sallys course! The difference in my knowledge and confidence in teaching is amazing! I love that the sessions can be fluid, if I’ve had an issue or a question come up in my teaching with a student, I have been able to bring those questions and concerns to Sally who has a wealth of knowledge, (I swear there isn’t anything she doesn’t know about teaching singing!) It’s great that even if we are focussing on a totally different subject area she is flexible enough to take the time to help me with my issues. This is something I never experienced even within my group teacher training, they just never seemed to have enough time with so many people attending and this in itself is worth signing up to train with Sally for!
– Thank you for everything!

"If there are no qualifications needed to be a singing teacher why is training so important?"

Quite Simply – Because we don’t know what we don’t know!! As a contemporary voice teacher who also helps support injured singers in their recovery – Sally has come face to face with the harsh reality that untrained singing teachers can cause a lot of harm to their singers voices, so many singers have come to Sally for retraining after injuries have been caused under the poor (sometimes extremely harmful) advice and guidance of previous teachers. It’s why Sally has made it her mission to help teachers learn how to protect not only their own voices but those of their singers!!

And most importantly, as a singing or voice teacher you have a duty of care to your students. It is essential you are confident that you are able to ensure that your students can study and learn with you without risk of vocal injury! New advancements are happening all the time with voice training, make sure you are up to date on the latest advice, guidance and training approaches to help build your singers voices and careers! However! Please don’t let this worry you, this is why we are here to help!

"I don’t understand how I could go through 10 years of vocal training and have never once been introduced to some of the incredible things Sally has taught me"

I am so glad I found Sally’s one to one teacher training course!!! I had spent a lot of time looking for support getting into teaching and after a rubbish experience during my music degree where I feel like I actually took a step back in my vocal technique due to inconsistent teachers and bad advice, I was absolutely blown away by what I learnt even in my first few sessions, I don’t understand how I could go through 10 years of vocal training and have never once been introduced to some of the incredible things Sally has taught me!!! It has really made me realise there are basic singing teachers and vocal coaches and then there is Sally!!!

She is nurturing and caring and always has time for your worries or insecurities. She truly just wants to help support you and help make you the best singing teacher you can be. What I love most is that she’s inspired me to continue pushing myself in my performance career. Uni nearly ruined that for me but she has given me the confidence, knowledge and the ability to pick myself up and get on with it. Thank you Sally for everything you have done for me!
